Why and How

Why Now?

  • The world is changing dramatically at a fast, unstoppable pace, and the fragile balance of crafts needs to be preserved in order to prevent the disappearance of several forms of knowledge and specific methodologies, which are facing serious risk of extinction.
  • Crafts are a cornerstone of our close relationship with the Earth and the natural resources it provides. While the unparalleled technological evolution of the last 100 years has revolutionized our way of life for the better, it has also threatened this seminal and symbiotic connection, which must begin to be reestablished through a deeper understanding and development of age-old craft practices.
  • Having often resulted from necessity, the development of crafts is also a testament to the resourcefulness, adaptability and flexibility of our species, a quality which is becoming increasingly useful in the face of the endlessly complex challenges our world is facing today. It is a common denominator between people and cultures, a connection point that must be urgently reinforced at strongly disruptive moments.
  • DFFWAC is also attuned to the role of women and their relevance at the forefront of today’s society — an issue that continues to be a priority in the beginning of this Century. Across several different fields of action, women need to not only underline their positions as leaders, but also redesign forms of action.
  • The challenge of the Design Foundation for Women and Crafts lies in achieving this while protecting and appreciating what has already been accomplished in the past.
