Why and How

Why Crafts?

  • There is an urgent need to act in the area of environmental sustainability, something that crafts have continuously respected through the use of naturally sustainable resources and production processes.
  • A wide range of craft production has recurrently evolved due to the effects of different social, cultural and economic factors, meaning that craft-based manufacturing that conforms to local styles and traditions are forms of material cultural heritage. More than being protected, crafts need to regain their role in society as fundamental pillars for the achievement of an advanced, cultural and ecologically responsible civilization.
  • The impact of crafts on social and territorial cohesion has been overlooked in the past, and needs to be mapped and developed in a more efficient and successful manner.
  • Creativity has never played such a strong role: the global economy is re-designing itself and new technologies are challenging established business models. The rise of the creative economy has increasingly called for knowledge and skills that are characteristic of craftsmanship and useful for this new era.
  • With the development of Artificial Intelligence it has become increasingly crucial that human skills be preserved and stimulated.
  • Consumers have become increasingly informed and rigorous, searching for identity, authenticity, uniqueness, quality and a concern for the environment in the products they consume.
  • There are contemporary models of craftsmanship – that follow the several technological developments we have been experiencing in the 21st Century – which need to be identified, systematized and enhanced.
  • Crafts are deeply related to other areas of artistic and cultural production, including visual art, theatre, performance, music or food, and these fields of interaction need to be further investigated and stimulated.
